Back in the fall, I realized I should make some longies for Micah. I came up with some colors I liked, and bought yarn for a couple of pairs. There was one pair in particular that I envisioned him wearing on Christmas morning.

These longies made the trip to Ohio with us… and back…. and on Christmas morning they had exactly one leg finished. When we got home from Ohio, I hit a bit of a slump, and didn’t even touch them for months. I finally picked them up at the end of February, and in the beginning of March I managed to get the things done. So much for winter longies. Maybe if I start now, I’ll have a stash for next year.

I am very startled to report that the soaker actually fits the baby.

I am not the sort of person that sits down and wips up a cute little thing that looks and functions exactly as intended, let me tell ya. So while I should probably be excited, I am mostly just surprised, and secretly waiting for something to go terribly wrong. Which it did, as soon as Micah pee-peed. Nothing horrible, but the soaker definitely leaked. However, I was sort of expecting that, since I was pretty sure I hadn’t washed it right the first time.

So I rewashed it, making sure to put in extra Lanolin and let it soak for awhile. Let it dry all over again, and put it back on the baby. And it worked! I am amazed. The crocheting certainly isn’t air-tight, but it really doesn’t leak.

It lasted a good couple of hours, including a trip to the neighbor’s. I am planning to try it in the car tonight, and if I get really brave, overnight. And, I already ordered more yarn. In a couple of different colors. In softer yarn, which I am excited about. And I started a pair of shorties, for Chava.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I finally finished my first wool cover. I have wanted to try wool for awhile, but I’ve been intimidated by the process of washing and drying it. You have to keep it lanolized, and you have to make sure it doesn’t shrink or stretch.

However, it is also supposed to make great covers. It both absorbs and repels liquid; which is no small thing. It is antimicrobial, so you don’t have to wash it nearly as often. It is good for moderating temperature, and is an all natural fiber, unlike the diaper covers I’m using now.

So, a bit hesitantly, I started my first cover. I finished it, and then decided to add the drawstring, so it actually took a little longer. (I used this pattern, from With A Tangled Skein)

We washed it outside, mostly because the kids were out playing, and I was impatient. I realized afterwards that I was supposed to let it soak a bit.

We rolled it in a towel (carefully, so it didn’t stretch) and laid it inside to dry.

The kids decided they needed to wash every toy in the yard. In shocking news, it turns out that when you get wool wet, it smells like sheep. Now our toys smell faintly of sheep, as well.

It’s currently sitting on my pass-through, almost dry. The next step is to try it on the baby…
